Washington Pioneer Network was started over 10 years ago by Charlene Boyd and Wendy Lustbader. The mission statement is: Washington Pioneer Network is a coalition supporting "a culture of long-term care that is life-affirming, satisfying, humane and meaningful." We advocate and facilitate deep system change and transformation in our culture of aging. To achieve this, we:
  • Create communication, networking and learning opportunities;
  • Build and support relationships and community;
  • Identify and promote transformations in practice, services, public policy and research;
  • Develop and provide access to resources and leadership

Organizational Structure
Washington Pioneer Network is a registered 501 C-3 nonprofit organization. There is a Steering Committee that meets monthly.

Washington Pioneer Network holds educational events throughout the year in the Seattle area and charges $15 per person. WPN has also sold T-shirts in the past two years at events and occasionally receives small donations.

2014 Accomplishments
  • Helped host Dr. Bill Thomas' "Second Wind" tour and distribute tickets. We sent volunteers to support it the day of the big event.
  • Supported Momentia Seattle, a new dementia friendly activity initiative and group.
  • Steering Committee members attended two local conferences (Leading Age & Washington Health Care Association) to lead sessions on culture change and the Pioneer Network.
  • Supported a book tour for Beth Baker by assisting in her visit to Seattle to promote her book: With A Little Help from My Friends – Creating Community as We Grow Older.
  • Assisted in getting the Music & Memory program going in several local supported living homes.
